Psalm 103v13: As a father pities his children, so the LORD has compassion on those who fear Him.
Well Happy Fathers’ Day everyone!
The Bible makes it clear that God Himself is the ultimate Father. (For anyone who is not so familiar with Bible language, “The LORD” = God). So what does this actually mean in practice?
God represents the very best of human “fatherliness”, and he also far exceeds it. So where human fathers show love and generosity and kindess to their children, then God does that even more. It is not a complete analogy, because there are some ways that God has disciplined human beings which are not available to human fathers, but then He is after all God; that is his divine right. He is Father not only to each one of us as individuals, but to the whole human race.
The Bible says so many things about God.
– He is our creator. He created this entire universe
– He owns us
– He is perfectly good
– He sets the rules
And yet in addition to all these things, He is also our Father!
This means that He sincerely cares about us. This verse talks about people who fear God. And yet the Bible teaches that God is Father not only to people who fear Him, who recognise Him as God, but He is Father to each and every one of us! Imagine how amazing that is, to be able to say, no matter who you are, no matter how rich or poor you are, no matter what background you may have come from, no matter what success or failure you may have made of your life: God is my Father! This gives everyone of us – every single human being who has ever lived, and who will ever live – such profound dignity. In fact, it is not a stretch to say that God is the Father of all creation, because the Bible teaches that God has compassion on everything that He has created – Psalm145v9. However we human beings are special even among God’s creatures because He gave us that extra special dignity of being made in His image, with intelligence, with understanding, with creativity: Genesis 1v27
God is our Father! That means that not only does He care about us, but He also seeks to interact with us, as a loving father will interact with his children. He provides for this world. He did not just create this world, then sit back and watch – or laugh, but He continues to sustain the world with His care and His power Colossians 1v17. He wants to guide each one of us with His wisdom. If we’ve grown up hearing this, then we might take it for granted that “God loves us”. But there is absolutely nothing inevitable about it, that just because God created us that He should love us. The ultimate act of love is that God sent Jesus down to die on the cross for us, in our place. The logic of that would be ludicrous in any other context – that someone would give up their life for their own creation, when He could easily just create another universe. However this is how much God loves us! John 3v16
The fact that God is our Father also means that He sets the rules. I firmly believe that God created the literal rules of the universe, the physics, the biology – and He also created the rules of how we are to interact with one another and with Him. Sometimes these rules might seem difficult, or even impossible. However when I am struggling with God’s rules, I remember that God set His rules out of love for me, and from His perspective which is vastly superior to mine. Isaiah 55v9 So obeying God’s rules is the very best thing I can ever do for myself, even when those rules seem impossible.
So in summary then, absolutely none of us was born to a cold, uncaring universe. Rather there is a force working for the benefit of each one of us, seeking to see each one of us land on our feet and have happy, beautiful lives. But God is more than a force. God is actually a Person. He has a personality. He thinks, He reasons. He speaks. And if we allow Him into our lives, He will speak with us, He will relate with us personally, and He absolutely will demonstrate Himself to be the very best Father we could ever, ever dream of having. God bless you all! 🙂
